Research Interest Statement
Maureen Durkin's research focuses on the epidemiology and prevention of childhood disabilities, injuries, and perinatal and neurodevelopmental disorders. Internationally, Durkin has conducted collaborative research on methods for surveillance of developmental disabilities and has directed comparative epidemiologic studies in several low-income countries which have provided the first estimates from such countries of the prevalence and causes of neurodevelopmental disabilities including mental retardation, cerebral palsy and other motor disorders, blindness, deafness and seizure disorders. Major findings from this work have included evidence of relatively high prevalence of developmental disabilities in low-income countries, identification of brain infections, poverty, maternal illiteracy and consanguinity as important risk factors for childhood disabilities in low income countries, and evidence of the occurrence of persistent post-traumatic stress syndrome among children exposed to a natural disaster.
