Research Interest Statement
Marty S. Kanarek is an environmental epidemiologist. Recent research includes a study of PCBs and other contaminants of Great Lakes fish and their potential effects on human health. Kanarek and colleagues found that only a minority of anglers eat some of all of the fish they catch; “catch and release” has become the dominant feature of sport fishing. Virtually no anglers, however, were familiar with Wisconsin’s fish advisories, but many had heard of the health risks from their local newspaper and television. The study also showed that women were not aware of the health risks for their children posed by the mother’s ingesting contaminated fish during pregnancy. In response to the study, a consortium of wildlife managers in upper midwest states developed a coordinated effort to reach pregnant women and members of minority groups for whom English is a second language.
