Research Interest Statement
Seshadri’s recent work has focused on the impact of demographic differences in shaping cross country income differences. Along with his co-author, Rody Manuelli, he argues in several recent papers that differences in the age structure of population and longevity are critical to understanding the wealth and poverty of nations. He has examined the effect of technological change in the household sector and shown that it is a key determinant of the rise in married women’s labor force participation. In a by-product of this work, Seshadri argues that the baby boom was characterized by a tremendous technological advance in the production of home capital (appliances) relative to market capital. Seshadri has also investigated the impact of technological change in agriculture and manufacturing in accounting for the U.S. Demographic Transition. These three papers on economic demography culminated in an article in the Handbook of Economic Growth. In addition, he has several recent papers with Karl Scholz on the adequacy of retirement savings.
