Curriculum Vitae
Research Interest Statement
mith studies elderly stroke patients using a Medicare claims-based dataset which combines data for both fee-for-service (FFS) and managed care (HMO) Medicare beneficiaries. She demonstrated that traditional measures of quality may not be valid if differences in the two groups reflect an alternative service mix. Smith is using the WLS to investigate access to healthcare, utilization and outcomes, and patient preferences. They find substantial differences in the near elderly in their desired involvement in discussing and selecting treatment, and a clear need for improved strategies for provider-patient information exchange. Smith is the Director of the UW Health Innovation Program (HIP), and Assistant Director, Community Academic Partnership (CAP) core, for the new NIH-funded UW Institute for Clinical and Translational Research (ICTR). She also serves as Co-Director of the Cancer Control Program, and Co-Leader of the Cancer and Aging Program with the UW Paul P. Carbone Comprehensive Cancer Center
