If no one has preregistered for a course one week prior to its start date, the class may be cancelled. To preregister for a class, send mail to SSCCLASS indicating which class(es) you plan to attend. You will be reminded about your preregistration through e-mail a day or two before the class begins. Vmail: a mailer that works just like VMS mail. VCL : a shell (command language) that acts as much as possible like VMS's DCL command language. Using these three programs it is possible to use UNIX just as if it were VMS. These programs are coming up for renewal in the next month, so we tried to determine how much they are being used. We found that TPU and Vmail are both fairly popular packages. Since both are also cheap to renew, we have decided to continue to make them available. VCL is not being used very much at all. We have decided not renew our VCL licenses on either ULTRIX or SunOS. We will be glad to hear any 11th-hour dissents from that decision, however. Send them to CONSULTANT. --------------------------------------- Project Accounting begins on UNIX today --------------------------------------- UNIX users should be sure to read the current bulletin message about the initiation of project accounting on UNIX beginning February 1st. There are a few small differences between project accounting on VMS and UNIX, but none that should cause inconvenience. We are beta testing the accounting software on UNIX, so we cannot promise that it will work flawlessly. We invite any comments about the software (send to CONSULTANT) because part of our job as a beta test site is to pass such comments along to the vendor so that they can make improvements. The computing staff are not the right people to whom to comment on the question of whether project accounting ought to be done at all. ------------------------------------ Gopher and Xgopher installed on UNIX ------------------------------------ `gopher' clients have been installed on ULTRIX and SunOS. By default they connect to WiscINFO. For X-windows users, `xgopher', a very nice interface to gopher was installed. Manual pages are available for both; there's also internal help. We hope to announce a gopher client for VMS in the near future. -------------------------------- LIMDEP 6.0 Now Working on ULTRIX -------------------------------- The title says it all. The problem was due to a fortran compiler bug. To invoke LIMDEP 6.0 under ULTRIX, type 'limdep'.
