========================= SSCC News, February, 1998 ========================= Inside this issue... Interactive VMS Tape Processing Now Available SSCC Training Schedule for Spring Semester Default Workspace Allocation Increased for GAUSS Network Update Warning about Checking Mail in Netscape on UNIX --------------------------------------------- Interactive VMS Tape Processing Now Available --------------------------------------------- A self-serve "station" for running interactive VMS 9-track tape jobs has been set up in the I/O Room in Social Science 4411A. Recall that after October 31, 1998, interactive tape processing will be the only way to run 9-track tape jobs as Operator assisted/batch procedures for mounting and reading 9-track tapes will be eliminated. This is one of several previously announced changes for VMS. See SSCC's web pages (https://www.ssc.wisc.edu) for up-to-date information on these upcoming changes planned for VMS. Use this self-service station to assist you in determining the tables of 9-track tapes and in copying needed files on these tapes to other media. Two SSCC Training Sessions have been scheduled to assist you with using the station in the I/O Room. One is February 18 from 10:00-11:30. The other is March 4 from 2:30-4:00. Send mail to SSCCLASS to register. We also have special consulting hours for tape consulting: Tom Flory in Soc. Sci. 4401 on Mondays from 2 to 4 and Tingli Pan in Soc. Sci. 4403 on Wednesdays from 1 to 4. ------------------------------------------ SSCC Training Schedule for Spring Semester ------------------------------------------ All SSCC training sessions require preregistration. If less than three people have preregistered for a course one week prior to its start date, the class may be canceled. To preregister for a class, either send mail to SSCCLASS indicating which class(es) you plan to attend or register through SSCC's web page form (www.ssc.wisc.edu/Sscc/Training/trainreg.htm) You will be reminded about your preregistration through e-mail a day or two before the class begins. Descriptions for each of the training sessions listed above may be found in SSCC's web page (https://www.ssc.wisc.edu/Sscc/Training/trains98.htm). ------------------------------------------------ Default Workspace Allocation Increased for GAUSS ------------------------------------------------ The default workspace allocation for GAUSS has been increased from 10 MB to 50 MB. Using GAUSS's configuration file, you can increase the workspace allocation up to 100 MB when running very large jobs. Instructions for changing the GAUSS configuration file can be found in SSCC How-to #48. Do not increase the workspace allocation above 100 MB without first contacting consultant to schedule a time to run your job, as large jobs will degrade system performance and may cause system problems. This increase is made possible because RAM on GUY has been increased from 256 MB to 768 MB. -------------- Network Update -------------- Most of the floors in the building are now connected to the new ATM network. The network outages that occurred one week last month were corrected with new software. Soon we will be connecting the Social Science Building to the campus's high-speed ATM backbone network. ----------------------------------------------- Warning about Checking Mail in Netscape on UNIX ----------------------------------------------- The current version of Netscape on UNIX (version 3.01) has some tools for checking, receiving, and sending e-mail. You get to these tools by either choosing "Mail" from the "Window" menu or by clicking on the mail icon (the small envelope in the bottom-right of the Netscape window). We highly recommend that you do NOT select either of these items. Doing so will cause all your mail currently in an INBOX folder to be moved to a directory created by Netscape called nsmail. Once mail has been moved, it is no longer readable by any other mailer on the UNIX system. Version 4 of Netscape contains a much improved mailer called Messenger. Once we get this version of Netscape for UNIX and have an opportunity to test Messenger, we may decide to support it and provide documentation and training.
