Six VMS print queues are now available as remote printers to UNIX users. The queues are: sscprint irpprint single double single_ps double_ps See UNIX bulletin for details about using these queues. -------------------- New SSC publications -------------------- Three new publications are available for SSC users: How to Restore deleted files How to set up VT320 terminals for using UNIX How to use the SSC laser printers Tou can browse through all the "How-to" publications in a ring binder in 2470 Social Science, then ask the Consultant for a copy of the one(s) you want. --------------------- Terminal Room Closing --------------------- The terminal room, Social Science 2470 will be closed January 13, 1993 for prelims. Consulting will still be available by mail. ------------------------------ TeX, LaTeX, SliTex, BibTeX.... ------------------------------ TeX and many supporting binaries have been compiled on SunOS. Here are the newly available programs: tex The TeX text formatting and typesetting program latex The LaTeX macro package for TeX slitex A variant of LaTeX; it is used for making slides bibtex Creates a bibliography from TeX output xdvi A DVI (the output from TeX) previewer for X windows dvips Converts a TeX DVI file to PostScript TeX capabilities and language are described in "The TeXbook" by Donald E. Knuth, published by Addison-Wesley. Another book is "TeX for the Impatient" by Paul W. Abrahams, also published by Addison-Wesley. The LaTeX language is described in "LaTeX - A Document Preparation System" by Leslie Lamport, published by Addison-Wesley. This book includes appendices discussing SliTeX and BibTeX. Each of these programs has an installed `man' page. On ULTRIX, only tex, xdvi and dvips are available. Latex, slitex and bibtex are being worked on even as you read this. Check `broadcast' or `bull' for announcements of their availability. --------------------------- Ghostview installed on UNIX --------------------------- Ghostview, software that enables you to preview PostScript documents on your screen has been installed on UNIX. The ghostview program provides an X11 user interface for the ghostscript interpreter. Ghostview and ghostscript function as two cooperating programs. Ghostview creates the viewing window and ghostscript draws in it. To preview a document, type ghostview filename where filename is the name of the postscript file you want to preview. Refer to the man pages for complete documentation. ------------------------------------------ SSCWHO and BROADCAST now available on UNIX ------------------------------------------ SSCWHO is a locally-written and maintained program that gives you information on who is authorized for the unix network, their agency, and group affiliation. To use SSCWHO, type sscwho pattern where pattern can be a user name, part or all of a full name, or some other pattern. Remember, UNIX is case sensitive so if you are searching for "Bart Simpson," say, you will need to type the uppercase "B" and "S". You can also view the BROADCAST on the Unix side now by typing broadcast In the past, the broadcast was only available on UNIX by typing "more /etc/motd". ----------------- Bulletin for UNIX ----------------- Bulletin has been compiled for SunOS, so all UNIX bulletin messages are now available on all UNIX hosts. To see the current messages, type bull or bulletin --------------------------------------------- Requests for Software: "sysfolk@ssc.wisc.edu" --------------------------------------------- If there is a freeware program that you have heard about and would like a system programmer to look into finding, compiling, installing, etc. -or- if there is some other *system programmer* need you may have, please send UNIX mail to sysfolk VMS users can send mail to eunice::sysfolk ------------------------------- Consulting question of the month -------------------------------- Lately, users have been sending mail to the operator asking that ROBINBATCH be opened. This is a queue that is open ONLY at night. It automatically opens at 6 p.m. and closes at 6 a.m. This only applies to ROBINBATCH.
