The bulletin details these items: -- Problem with screen display when using Procomm -- Problem with screen display when not using Procomm -- ED or EDIT no longer brings up EDT (EVE now default editor) -- Setting EDT as default editor in Mail The features described in the bulletin are permanent changes resulting from the system upgrade last week. These are the same features discovered when we installed EAGLE on the cluster, as it came with VMS 6.1. Other problems which appeared after the upgrade last week are not permanent. Some are already fixed, and for others we are expecting fixes soon. Software such as SPSS, ADJQUOTA, LOOKUP, etc. will NOT be affected on the SOC3, SSCB, and ROBIN cluster nodes as they were on EAGLE. These problems resulted from incompatibilities in system "architecture", not the operating system. --------------------------------------------- Public Terminal Room to be Closed for Prelims --------------------------------------------- The public terminal room (Soc. Sci. 2470) will be closed for students taking prelims from 8:00a.m. to 5:00p.m. on January 19th. Consulting will still be available. ------------ SSC Exchange ------------ The SSC Exchange is a place for SSC users to post messages about such things as: items for sale, rent, or trade; rides needed; roommate requests for conferences and the like; announcements of events of interest to the SSC community; and more. The Exchange functions like an old-fashioned bulletin board where you post notes with your name and a way to reach you and (hopefully) get responses directly from interested parties. The Exchange is managed by SSC grad students--they post and delete messages as needed. The Exchange is open ONLY to SSC users - no one from outside our SSC community will be able to see the directory listings - so people looking for rides, roommates and the like will not have personal security concerns about making this information available. To read the Exchange, type "exchange" at the VMS or UNIX prompt on any SSC node. See BULLETIN for details about how to post messages. ----------------- Operator Requests ----------------- SSC users may now make the following requests to the Operator (Phone: 3-4814; VMS username--OPERATOR; UNIX username--oper): ** UNIX disk full (user disk or /tmp disk) ** queue stopped ** port troubles (pc connection to network not responding) ** system performance questions (after hours) ** 9-track tape cleaning before job runs ------------------------------ SSC Publications Announcements ------------------------------ The following new publications are available for SSC users: How to Use Berkeley Mail on UNIX (#33) How to Transport SAS Data Sets between VAX and AXP (#34) The following SSC publications have recently been revised: VMS Mail and Networks (1-3) Using Telnet and FTP (1-5) Using SAS on VMS (3-11) Using SPSS on VMS (3-12) Using the MH Mailer on UNIX (7-2) Using EMACS (7-2) How to Set Up VT320 Terminals for Using EMACS or UNIX (#8) How to Use the SSC Laser Printers (#9) How to Access MadCat, the Campus Library Catalog (#11) SSC publications are available in the racks in the public terminal room, Soc. Sci. 2470. Electronic copies are also available in SSCGOPHER. TO UNSUBSCRIBE FROM THIS NEWSLETTER, just reply to this mail message indicating you want to unsubscribe.
