======================== SSCC News, October, 1998 ======================== Inside this issue... IMPORTANT Service Changes After October 31 SSCC Software Support Policy SAS No Longer Available on NORMAN Remaining SSCC Fall Training Schedule ------------------------------------------ IMPORTANT Service Changes After October 31 ------------------------------------------ This is the last reminder about three major changes in service that will take place after October 31, 1998: o The three remaining VAXes -- ROBIN, SSCB, SOC3 -- will be taken out of service. For details about the plans for the retirement of SSCC VAX architecture computers, visit: https://www.ssc.wisc.edu/Sscc/Vax/vax.htm o Any 9-track tapes remaining in the computer room will be boxed up and delivered to group leaders' offices. o CDE will retire its remaining SunOS computers. ---------------------------- SSCC Software Support Policy ---------------------------- Staff have undertaken a review of software currently in use at SSCC. The purpose of this review was to realistly assess what we offer SSCC users in the way of high-quality, professional help for your software problems and make this information publically available. As a result of this review, we have defined three levels of support and assigned SSCC's software on UNIX, VMS, and WinCenter to one of these three levels. You may view the software support policy at: https://www.ssc.wisc.edu/Sscc/Policies/softsupp.htm. Software for networked PCs will still be supported under SSCC's PC Support Policy, available at: https://www.ssc.wisc.edu/Sscc/Policies/pcsupp.htm. The soft command on UNIX has also be updated to display support levels. Type "soft -h" for information on how to use the soft command on UNIX. --------------------------------- SAS No Longer Available on NORMAN --------------------------------- SAS has been removed from NORMAN. This change was made for two reasons. First, NORMAN's load is very heavy because it handles a lot of users reading mail and it also processes all the Netscape jobs invoked from any UNIX computer. Second, with the increased computing power of GUY, it is a much better place to run SAS jobs. In addition to GUY, SAS is available on ELAINE, WINGRA, and MARIAH. ------------------------------------- Remaining SSCC Fall Training Schedule ------------------------------------- All SSCC training sessions require preregistration. To preregister for a class, either send mail to SSCCLASS indicating which class(es) you plan to attend or register through SSCC's web page form (www.ssc.wisc.edu/Sscc/Training/trainreg.htm).
