Carillon Bell Tower

Welcome from the Chair

The Department of Sociology here in Madison is a prosperous and excellent one -- often ranked number one in the world -- in a locale that, in 2007 has been identified as one of five perfect American college towns, one of the best 25 cities in which to live, and one of the top 10 best "green" cities. With this backdrop, we maintain our sociological excellence through rigorous research, methodological discipline and innovation, and theoretical sophistication, hiring the best quality faculty members at every level. We are also known for our superior undergraduate as well as graduate teaching (with an award-winning faculty), and make important public and policy contributions. Additionally, our technical professionals (computer support) and administrative staffs are without parallel. We have a culture of democracy and mutual support that is unusual in the academy and that our graduates continue to extol. Lately, we have had great success in increasing the recruitment and retention of underrepresented minorities and we are continuing this emphasis. Overall, our students have a wide range of substantive interests reflecting disparate kinds of expertise in aging and the life course, class analysis, demography, economic sociology, education, ethnomethodology and conversation analysis, family, gender, organizations, political sociology, social psychology, stratification, science and technology, and many other arenas of inquiry. Methodologically, students choose to do sociological research in many different ways, whether through direct observation, archival work, analysis of recorded interactional data, ethnography, large-scale sample surveys, secondary data analysis, or theoretical inquiry.
