ORDERING TEXTBOOKS AND DESK COPIES
University policy requests that all instructors list textbooks and other materials, both required and supplementary online. See the Registrar’s Office web page for complete instructions:
https://registrar.wisc.edu/textbook_information.htm
Entering your textbook information in the timetable will allow local bookstores to download the data and order books for your students.
Contact Ted Babcock if you want to order desk copies, which are generally available for both faculty/lecturers and TAs.
Contact info for local bookstores:
-University Book Store: email llorton@uwbookstore.com or sscheibel@uwbookstore.com or call 608-257-3784
-A Room of One’s Own: room@chorus.net or 608-257-7888, fax 608-257-7457
COPYING AND SALE OF COURSE READING PACKETS
Department of Sociology procedures when using L&S Copy Centers (Social Sciences & Humanities Bldg)
- Provide Patrick (8128 Social Science) with a bibliography of the materials for which you would like approval to place in the reading packet. Provide this list as soon as possible (six weeks in advance of first day of classes ideally); this is a peak time for the Copy Center and the later your bibliography is received, the less likely it is that your reading packet will be prepared prior to the first day of classes. At the top of the list, provide the following: your (instructor’s) name, course name and number and semester and year the course will be offered. Be sure to note page numbers for each item in the bibliography of materials.Several conditions must be met prior to approval being granted:
- Your request must be made, and permission granted, in advance of selling any handouts.
- The handouts being sold are in lieu of other required text material.
- Students are not required to purchase the handout and must be informed that they may use a reserve copy in a library/reading room in lieu of purchasing a copy. At least one copy (more than one in the case of large enrollments) must be placed on reserve in a library or reading room for students who elect not to purchase the handout.
- Only the actual cost of preparing and copying the handouts is passed on to the students.
- All necessary copyright permissions must be obtained. The copyright law permits limited copying of copyrighted materials for academic purposes, under the “fair use” doctrine. The campus office of Administrative Legal Services has indicated in a memo of March 7, 1983, that it believes instructional staff members will be in compliance with the law when copying is done within the following guidelines:
- The materials are not used repeatedly; that is, you have not used them in preceding classes and are not likely to use them in subsequent classes (semester by semester)
- No more than one copy is made for each student
- The notice of copyright is included in the first page of each copy distributed
- The students are not assessed a fee beyond the actual cost of reproduction, and upon payment the copy becomes the property of the student
- In the case of longer materials and books, the portion copied is selective and sparing in comparison to the whole of the work. (This has been determined to be no more than 20 pages or 10% of the total.)
For further information on compliance with federal copyright law, a more detailed explanation is available upon request from the Office of Administrative Legal Services.
- The instructor or Patrick will request approval by email to L&S to Brian Bubenzer, room 208C South Hall.
- L&S will send approval by email to the department or the instructor and the Copy Center.
- Once you receive the approval, provide a copy of the cover sheet and the approved reading packet materials to Patrick in the main office. Office staff will complete necessary paperwork and send information to the Copy Center. Number of copies are determined by course enrollment
- Check with the Copy Center on status of your request. It is your responsibility to pick up copies for your use and to ensure that reserve copies are taken to appropriate libraries.
Alternatively, you may bring your completed packet to Student Print run by the Assoc. Students of Madison (ASM) located in B-114 Memorial Union. They do not require approval and will sell packets directly to the students at cost.
HOW TO PUT COURSE MATERIALS ON ELECTRONIC RESERVE
Once course packets are created by the Social Science Copy Center it is the instructor’s responsibility to ensure that readings are placed on reserve at appropriate libraries for those students who decide not to purchase the packet.
The following links are for creating e-reserves:

Another resource for electronic reserve as well as book/article delivery and other services is the Social Science Reference Library located in 8432 Sewell Social Sciences Building. See the web site at
