====================== SSCC News, April, 1998 ====================== Inside this issue... Disk Quotas to be Enforced on Unix Keep Your Anti-Virus Software Up-To-Date Changes in PC Support Additional Memory Added to WinCenter2 ---------------------------------- Disk Quotas to be Enforced on Unix ---------------------------------- To alleviate disk resource problems and so protect the data of users on Unix, disk quotas will be established on Unix home directories. All users will have a 100 MB disk quota on their Unix home directory. That is, users will not be allowed to have more than 100 MB of data in their home directory. These quotas will not be increased for any reason. When a user uses the available quota, the user will not be able to add any more data until space is cleared off. Users with additional disk space needs will be granted an additional 200 MB disk quota on the /aux file system. This space will be granted upon request. If further disk space is needed, users may be granted a quota of up to 500 MB with the permission of their group leader for a maximum of six months, renewable. Many users have already been given a directory on /aux and others may have access to this space by sending an email request to consultant. Finally, users with a need for a large amount of disk space for a very short time can have as much disk space as is available on a new file system called /temp/fivedays. However, every night, any file more than five days old will be automatically deleted. This file system will replace the /users/tempdisk space. Daily backups of /home and /aux will continue, but /temp/fivedays WILL NOT BE BACKED UP. Quotas on /home will be phased in to minimize work disruption for users, starting May 1st. Each month, quotas will be decreased until the quota reaches 100 MB. Below is the schedule: May 1st 300 MB June 1st 200 MB July 1st 150 MB August 1st 100 MB Users using more than 300 MB of disk space should reduce their disk usage to below 300 MB (and, preferably, below 100 MB) before May 1st. All users must be using less than 100 MB of home directory disk space by August 1st. Summary: /home Home directories 24 GB Backed up 100 MB quota granted upon receiving a new account Quota not expandable /aux Additional disk space 12 GB Backed up 200 MB quota granted on request Quota expanded with permission of group leader Quota expandable for 1, 3, or 6 months Quota expandable to 300, 400, or 500 MB /temp/fivedays Additional short term disk space for large amounts of data 4 GB NOT BACKED UP No quotas: users may use as much space as is available Every night, files five days old are removed ---------------------------------------- Keep Your Anti-Virus Software Up-To-Date ---------------------------------------- Thanks to a site license to which the SSCC contributes, all University of Wisconsin students and employees have the right to download and install Command AntiVirus (formerly F-PROT) on their PCs. Follow the link at the bottom of the SSCC web page (https://www.ssc.wisc.edu) to get the software. The latest version of Command AntiVirus has been available for only a short time, so if you are running an older version of F-PROT you should update your software. Also, be sure to update your .def (a.k.a. "signature") files. The latest ones are available from the same web site. The .def files are the ones that define the signatures of viruses that Command AntiVirus can detect and remove. Your virus protection is seriously compromised if you do not have the latest .def files. --------------------- Changes in PC Support --------------------- Since we announced plans to establish a Microsoft Windows network and a commitment to begin formally providing support for individual PC's in December 1995, our PC network has grown tremendously. We now have six Windows NT servers which provide application, print, and disk services as well as approximately 300 PCs in individual's offices. Andy Arnold has served as both co-system administrator and lead PC support person for this PC network. With an increasing number of PCs and servers to support, Andy has found it difficult to find the time needed to perform his system administrator duties. Because of this, additional SSCC staff are being deployed to assist with providing PC support. Andy will be concentrating his efforts on server administration and hardware support requests. Software support requests will be provided by other SSCC staff members and student hourlies. Please continue to send all PC support requests to consultant but don't be surprised to see some different (but familiar) faces at your door to service your PC requests. SSCC's PC support policy can be found at: http://www.wisc.edu/Policies/pcsupp.htm ------------------------------------- Additional Memory Added to WinCenter2 ------------------------------------- This week we doubled the amount of memory on WinCenter2 giving it a total of 256 MB of memory. With the additional memory, WinCenter2 will be able to support more simultaneous users than before. WinCenter1 was removed from the network last month. This computer is no longer "up-to-the-task" of supporting applications available on WinCenter and is now performing other administrative functions. If we find the increase in memory on WinCenter2 is not enough to meet user demand, we will purchase an additional server next fiscal year.
