======================= SSCC News, August, 1996 ======================= This is the SSCC News. This monthly electronic newsletter will keep you informed about recent changes on the SSCC computer networks. We hope this information will help improve communication between the SSCC computing staff and all of you computer users out there. Inside this issue... Ultrix to be Retired September 30 - Make those Transport Files! CDE1S to become Private UNIX Node September 30 STATA License Expired on SunOS Computers Reduced Consulting Hours in August New and Updated User Documentation IP Address Changes Bulletin Now Available from SSCC Web Page WiscWorld Dial Pool Will be down Aug. 8th --------------------------------------------------------------- Ultrix to be Retired September 30 - Make those Transport Files! --------------------------------------------------------------- We have been reminding you monthly since April that all Ultrix computers (EUNICE and CDE2) will be phased out early in the fall of 1996. The date has now been set -- AS OF OCTOBER 1, ULTRIX WILL BE NO MORE! SAS and SPSS system files created on Ultrix computers will no longer be readable after this date. These files have to be converted to transport files before they can be read by our SunOS or Digital UNIX computers. This conversion must take place on Ultrix so it is crucial that you take care of this before Ultrix's demise. We have two SSCC documents which describe this process in detail: How to Transport SAS Data Sets between Digital Unix, SunOS, and Ultrix (#1) How to Transport SPSS Files between Digital Unix, SunOS, and Ultrix (#12) These documents are available in printed form from consulting or in the Public Terminal Room. On-line versions can be found in SSCGOPHER. ------------------------------------------- CDE1S to become Private UNIX Node October 1 ------------------------------------------- Effective October 1, the Center for Demography's SunOS computer CDE1S will become a private node dedicated to running library software that was purchased this summer for the CDE Data and Print Libraries. Those of you who currently log on to CDE1S will need to switch either to our other SunOS machine, CDE2S, or to one of the Digital UNIX machines (NORMAN, ELAINE, or WINGRA). ---------------------------------------- STATA License Expired on SunOS Computers ---------------------------------------- The STATA license was not renewed on SunOS machines this summer in order to save licensing costs. STATA users on SunOS machines will now need to use the software on one of the Digital UNIX machines (NORMAN, ELAINE, or WINGRA). STATA system files created on a SunOS machine can be read on Digital UNIX machines without any modification. ------------------------------------ Reduced Consulting Hours August 5-23 ------------------------------------ There will be no afternoon consulting from August 5-23 due to staff vacations. Consulting will resume its regular hours of 9-12 and 1-3 beginning August 25. ---------------------------------- New and Updated User Documentation ---------------------------------- The UNIX and VMS Introductory Handbooks are now back from the print shop after some major updating. Be sure and pick up your copy either from consulting or from the user racks in the Public Terminal Room. Also, we have purchased copies of some new documentation from SAS Institute that you might be interested in: Categorical Data Analysis using the SAS System Logistic Regression Examples using the SAS System Survival Analysis using the SAS System: A Practical Guide A Step-by-Step Approach to using the SAS System for Factor Analysis and Structural Equation Modeling These books are being circulated by the CDE Print Library. ------------------ IP Address Changes ------------------ The IP addresses for four of our UNIX computers have changed: O/S Computer Name IP Address Ultrix eunice.ssc.wisc.edu 144.92.190.81 Ultrix cde2.ssc.wisc.edu 144.92.190.66 SunOS cde1s.ssc.wisc.edu 144.92.190.65 SunOS cde2s.ssc.wisc.edu 144.92.190.64 ----------------------------------------- Bulletin Now Available from SSCC Web Page ----------------------------------------- We have added a link to Bulletin from SSCC's web page. This was added mostly as a convenience for PC LAN users who rarely log on to UNIX or VMS as a way to keep up to date on system announcements. Everyone should read Bulletin regularly for class schedules, system downtimes, and other important announcements. The address for SSCC's web page is https://www.ssc.wisc.edu ----------------------------------------- WiscWorld Dial Pool Will be down Aug. 7th ----------------------------------------- WiscWorld modems will be down on Wednesday, August 7th from 2am until about noon while DoIT installs 192 additional modem lines.
