======================== SSC News, May, 1995 ======================== This is the SSC News. This monthly electronic newsletter will keep you informed about recent changes on the SSC computer networks. We hope this information will help improve communication between the SSC computing staff and all of you computer users out there. Inside this issue... PC Questions -- Who you gonna call (after Marcia leaves)? CONSULTANT! Additional Print Queues Now Available Requesting After-hours Access to the Public Terminal Room and I/O Room SmarTerm 240 for DOS discontinued LOOKUP now available from SSC Gopher --------------------------------------------------------------------- PC Questions -- Who you gonna call (after Marcia leaves)? CONSULTANT! --------------------------------------------------------------------- Most of you probably already know that Marcia Hazen will be leaving the SSC at the beginning of July. Due to long term budget uncertainties, we will not be able to replace Marcia with another full time staff person, at least right away. Meanwhile, existing SSC staff plus a new part time hire, Jeff Hayes, will be taking over Marcia's responsibilities. Because PC support will be shared by more people, we ask that all your requests for PC help go through consultant, either by e-mail (CONSULTANT) or phone (262-9917). This way we will be able to coordinate who does what and better track user requests. ------------------------------------- Additional Print Queues Now Available ------------------------------------- Last month we announced in SSCNEWS and bulletin the availability of a self-service laser printer in the terminal room for VMS printing. This printer is now available to UNIX users as well. The queue names are usersingle, userdouble, usersingle_ps, and userdouble_ps. For example, to print an ASCII file called dissert.sas to the userdouble queue you would type: lpr -Puserdouble dissert.sas. These queues are not yet available on the SunOS machines (cde1s-cde6s). Also last month we announced that you could once again print UNIX and VMS files from the HARMON workstation in the I/O room. It was announced that the VMS print queues IODOUBLE, IOSINGLE, IODOUBLE_PS, and IOSINGLE_PS would be deleted. Since then, we have figured out a way to make it possible to print files either directly from HARMON or remotely from any VMS or UNIX node. So, the VMS print queues were restored and similar queues were created for UNIX users: iosingle, iodouble, iosingle_ps, and iodouble_ps. These queues are not yet available on the SunOS machines (cde1s-cde6s). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Requesting After-hours Access to the Public Terminal Room and I/O Room ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Last month we announced in SSCNEWS and bulletin that a new door access control system had been installed in the Public Terminal Room and the Computer I/O Room giving authorized users after-hours access to these two rooms. So far we have processed over 100 requests. If you would like after-hours access, you will need to fill out an "After-hours Request Form" which is available in the Public Terminal Room, the I/O room, and outside of Social Science 4403. Just drop off the filled out form in the mailbox across from the 4th floor elevators labeled "After-hours Request". Your request will be processed within two business days. We will contact you only if we have problems with your authorization. --------------------------------- SmarTerm 240 for DOS discontinued --------------------------------- Persoft, the manufacturer of SmarTerm terminal emulation products, has notified us that SmarTerm 240 for DOS has been discontinued. The product will not be sold after June 30, and their support for the product will end on December 31, 1995. SSC staff recommend that anyone using SmarTerm 240 for DOS consider upgrading to SmarTerm 340 for DOS or 420 for Windows. SmarTerm products offer WordPerfect keyboard emulation and flexible connectivity options, and is a recommended terminal emulator for SSC users. To purchase SmarTerm products, contact Persoft at 273-6000 or by email at sales@persoft.com. ------------------------------------ LOOKUP now available from SSC Gopher ------------------------------------ The UW-Madison Phone Book is now available as a menu pick on the SSC Gopher. The on-line phone book uses the same database as the LOOKUP utility on VMS and UNIX. This facility should be of particular interest to EAGLE users who have not been able to use LOOKUP because of software incompatibility with EAGLE's system architecture. To use the UW-Madison Phone Book, access SSCGOPHER, then choose UW-Madison Phone Book . Follow the prompts on the screen to search the database.
