This monthly electronic newsletter will keep you informed about recent changes on the SSC computer networks. We hope this information will help improve communication between the SSC computing staff and all of you computer users out there. --------------------- New SSC Staff Members --------------------- We have two new people joining the SSC Co-op staff this month. Darwin Thielman comes from the State Elections Board here in Madison and Bill Palenske comes from the Federal Reserve Board in Washington D.C. Both are systems programmers who will be working primarily on UNIX systems administration. Darwin will eventually be doing VMS too. Drop by their office in 4329 to welcome them. Darwin starts October 13 and Bill starts the following week. --------------------------------------- New Naming Convention for New Usernames --------------------------------------- The SSC Co-op is now following a new naming convention for assigning NEW usernames (this new convention will NOT affect current usernames). The username will start with the first letter of the person's first name followed by the first seven characters of the person's last name. There were two reasons for the change: 1) In cases where users have the same last name, mail was often times not being sent to the person it was intended for. 2) This convention follows the same convention used by MACC which means students with email accounts from MACC will only have one username to remember (though they will have accounts both at MACC and SSC, not just one account.) Remember, you can always find out someone's username with the SSCWHO utility on both VMS and UNIX. Just type SSCWHO followed by the first few letters in the person's last name. ------------------------------------------ Emacs No Longer Available on SSCA and SSCB ------------------------------------------ Emacs is no available on SSCA and SSCB. You can still access Emacs from all the other VMS and UNIX nodes. The reason we had to take Emacs off SSCA and SSCB was because the program put too much of a load on these systems. -------------------- New SSC publications -------------------- The following new publications are available for SSC users: Using Worm Platters (SSC Pub.#2-8) Using WordPerfect Tables (SSC Pub.#3-15) How to transport SAS data sets from VMS to UNIX (How-to #17) SSC publications are available in the racks in the public terminal room, Soc. Sci. 2470. ------------------------------------------- Read This If You Submit Jobs to SSCBONETAPE ------------------------------------------- The tape drive used in the SSCBONETAPE queue was recently relocated to the SSCC VAX. We want to verify that jobs in that queue are running without error. If you submitted a job to SSCB that failed for a mysterious reason or if you have any reason to suspect a problem with the output of your job, please send mail to CONSULTANT with a description of the suspected problem and, if you kept it, the batch log file from the job(s). ----------------------- WordPerfect 6.0 for VMS ----------------------- WordPerfect Corp. has announced that it is committed to developing WordPerfect 6.0 for VMS. This is the most current version of WP for DOS, and it will be coming to Windows soon. WP 6.0 for VMS will probably be available next summer. ------------------------------------------ SSC Training Sessions - Fall Semester 1993 ------------------------------------------ We still have several training sessions to be presented this semester. Be sure and preregister for any sessions you plan to attend by sending mail to SSCCLASS. You will then be reminded about your preregistration through e-mail a day or two before the class begins.
