The three remaining VAXes -- ROBIN, SSCB, SOC3 -- will be taken out of service on October 31, 1998. October 31 also remains the deadline for the removal of all 9-track tapes now stored in the Computer Room. Any tapes remaining in the computer room after October 31 will be boxed up and delivered to your office. For details about the plans for the retirement of SSCC VAX architecture computers, visit: https://www.ssc.wisc.edu/Sscc/Vax/vax.htm --------------------------------------------- Reminder about SunOS Retirement on October 31 --------------------------------------------- As was announced in the June 1998 issue of SSCC News, CDE will retire its remaining SunOS computers on October 31, 1998. Following this retirement, SSCC will be supporting only one version of Unix, Compaq's Digital Unix. SSCC staff believes that this transition should go smoothly because all commercial application software on SunOS computers will be available on Digital UNIX computers and SSCC members have access to tools to convert SPSS and SAS system files from SunOS to Digital Unix format. ----------------------------------- Changes to Unix Disk Sharing to PCs ----------------------------------- As part of an update to the Unix disk sharing software, permissions to access Unix disk shares are being tightened. By default, only the owner of a disk will be able to access a home directory disk share. If you need to access a home directory disk share for an account other than your own, have the owner send an email message to consultant so that SSCC staff can arrange appropriate permissions. ------------------------------- Windows98 : Should You Upgrade? ------------------------------- With the release of Microsoft Windows98 earlier this summer, upgrading your computer may be on your mind. The SSCC recommends bypassing Windows98 and choosing WindowsNT Workstation for all future upgrades along with new PC purchases. Many problems with Windows98 are being reported. Check out https://www.ssc.wisc.edu/pcsup to discover the advantages of Windows NT.
