Stata Workshop: Automated Reports

In this workshop we'll talk about the tools Stata recently added for creating output files automatically, including putpdf, putdoc, and putexcel. These allow you to have a do file create a PDF, Word, or Excel file.

Note that with Stata 15 you now have several ways of integrating Stata results into documents:

  • Write a do file that creates your entire document. This is what we'll cover in this workshop. It's not ideal for documents with lots of text, but it can create documents with lots of results or graphs very quickly (i.e. reports).
  • Write a do file that creates a document containing just your results, then insert it into your larger document. This is discussed in Creating Publication-Quality Tables in Stata (and is a regular Stata Workshop topic).
  • Write your document in Markdown, including both the Stata code for generating your results and instructions for inserting them in the document. Then Stata can run the code, insert the results, and create the completed document. We anticipate teaching a workshop on Stata and Markdown in the near future.
