Data Wrangling in R (Independent Study)

Please note that due to the COVID-19 pandemic, all SSCC training will be offered online. Additional details and course links will be provided after registration.

These office hours are designed to support anyone working through SSCC's Introduction to R (Week 1) and Data Wrangling in R (Weeks 2-8) independently. (SSCC members with general R questions should use SSCC's regular statistical consulting services.) Bring questions, or learn from listening to the answers to others' questions. Requests to work through the exercises are also welcome. However, it is expected that you'll read the course material ahead of time and attempt the exercises on your own.

The following is the suggested schedule. To help build a learning community, questions about the week's suggested topics will get priority.

  • Week 1: Introduction to R and RStudio
  • Week 2: Data Objects, Types, Structures, and Class
  • Week 3: Vectors: Numeric and Logical
  • Week 4: Vectors: Character, Dates, and Categorical
  • Week 5: Reading Text Data and First Steps
  • Week 6: Subsetting
  • Week 7: Merging and Aggregating
  • Week 8: Reshaping and Data Wrangling Review
  • Instructor: Struck
    Room: Online Training
    Dates: 2/5, 2/12, 2/19, 2/26, 3/5, 3/12, 3/19, 3/26
    Time: 2:00 - 3:00

Each session of this class builds on the material taught in the previous sessions. If you cannot attend all of the class's sessions but still want to take the class, you must contact the Help Desk, find out what will be covered in the session(s) you will miss, and learn that material on your own before the next session. In most cases the material can be found in the SSCC Knowledge Base.
